November 9, 2024

Early this morning, a swift and coordinated response from multiple fire departments successfully extinguished a significant commercial structure fire.

At 4:59 a.m., the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department, alongside South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Company, 167th Airlift Wing Fire Department, and Martinsburg VA Medical Center Fire Department, were dispatched to the fire. Initial reports indicated heavy fire at the front of the building.

Engine 62 arrived on scene with three personnel, followed closely by Engine Tanker 63 with two. The intensity of the fire prompted a request for additional resources from neighboring departments, including the City of Martinsburg Fire Department, Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Company, Back Creek Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.

Crews initially attacked the flames with a deck gun and a 1¾-inch handline. Upon the arrival of Tower 80, aerial operations commenced, allowing for a more effective suppression of the bulk of the fire. As the aerial unit operated, additional crews deployed handlines and ladders to combat hot spots within the building and on the roof.

In total, three 1¾-inch handlines were used to extinguish residual fire and ensure all remaining hot spots were eliminated. By 8:34 a.m., Chief 60 declared the fire out, and units began clearing the scene.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire Safety Tip: This incident highlights the importance of having working fire extinguishers and clear emergency plans in commercial buildings. Ensure your workplace has up-to-date fire suppression equipment and that staff are trained on evacuation procedures.
